Matilda is the well known book by Roald Dahl, which was famously made into a film directed and staring Danny DeVito in 1996.
Its the sad but very funny story of a little girl, unloved and disliked by her parents and her greedy brother. But when Matilda attends a school which is run by Miss Trunchbull, who bullies children into behaving putting them into a iron like devise for punishment, she realises that she has developed psychokinesis as a result of her unused brain power.
Luckily for Matilda, she has a sweet and understanding teacher, who quickly realises that Matilda has a gift and can make things happen with her mind.
Matilda and her teacher, Miss Honey then go about trying to catch out her family and the unsuspecting headmistress Miss Trunchbull, using Matilda’s magic, with hilarious consequences.
Tim Minchin writes all the songs to this children’s master piece. If you have never seen Tim Minchins work then brace yourself, he is a very clever comedian, his songs during his own live performances are renowned for being extremely funny.
Some of the music will be slightly grotesque, but as Tim explains, ” This is a children’s story, but I want everyone to have moments where they’re laughing their guts out and when they’re wiping their tears”.
Matilda is currently being shown at the Royal Shakespeare Company until the 30th January 2011, and tickets are quickly selling out. This is a Christmas treat for all the family, so don’t miss it!
